Building a list from your blog can potentially give you a significant increase in revenue without the need to increase the number of visitors your blog gets. It doesn't cost much to build a list, but there is some initial work involved.

To get started with list building, there are four essential things you will need:

An autoresponder

Building a list without a tool like an autoresponder is not an option.

Not all autoresponders are equal, and it pays to choose a popular service and one that's been established for a few years. Why? Because otherwise, your emails could all end up going to the recipient's spam folders.

Mailchimp is a popular and established autoresponder service and has a free version.

Aweber is one of the oldest and best autoresponder services. It also has a free version.

Either of the above options will work well. I don't use Mailchimp myself because I've always used Aweber (been using it since 2006), but according to feedback from students of the training course, Mailchimp is less user-friendly than Aweber.

An opt-in form

What is it? It's a tool that allows you to store email addresses in a way that complies with the law and send out can-spam compliant emails. Opt-in forms are placed on your blog. Often in a widget area, like the sidebar, for example. Alternatively, opt-in forms can be pop-ups that are set to appear after a specific time. There are other variations of pop-up opt-in forms, such as forms that appear when the user takes a particular action, like clicking on a button or a link.

The opt-in form is set up in your autoresponder and then added to your blog using some code (don't worry, it's straightforward 😊 ). When a user enters their email address and any other details (name, for example) on the opt-in form and clicks the Submit button, their details are passed to the autoresponder, where they are added to your list. And that is how you build a can-spam compliant list.

A series of pre-written emails

This part does not need to take a lot of time, to begin with. Providing you have at least two or three emails written and ready to go out when people start opting into your list, the rest of the email series can be added after you've put the opt-in form on your blog.

A lead magnet

What is it? A lead magnet is something that you give to a user, and in return, they join your email list. It needs to be something of actual value to the user. Otherwise, why should they give you their email address? Saying something like "sign up for updates" will not work because you're not giving users any reason to opt-in.

A lead magnet could be a guide, a report, a mini-course, a discount (if you're selling products or services directly from your blog). It should be unique and not PLR (PLR content is ready-made content that you can purchase off-the-shelf. It's sold 1000s of times and circulated far and wide). Level 3 of the training course covers lead magnets in detail and how to create them.
